Hello Dear Reader!
I hope this finds you very well. Happy Fall Equinox.
Equinox is when day and night bow to each other, and together whisper, ‘change is in the air’.
The above quote is not attributed to any one person but to the team at Insight Timer. I like the image of two little individuals doffing their caps and bowing humbly as they pass each other at an even pace.
There is a doubtful sense of relief as summer passes into fall here in the West. The fire danger seems less, there is a promise of cooler evenings and of course the gorgeous rich colors of the trees, hillsides and fields are infused by the lower angle of the sun.
I just returned from a road trip to Ashland, Oregon. Many theatre friends gathered onstage and in the audience to honor James Edmondson, who sat in the audience, enrapt. My long time friend, Randall Stuart created an evening of thanks to “Dear James” by populating a stage with theatre greats to re-enact rehearsal and performance moments from Henry IV, part 1 which Jim directed in 1980. Randall (then aged 20) played a character not in the play but from the annals of history, namely John Hardyng, Hotspur’s young squire. Jim became Randall’s mentor and made a pact of loyalty in 1980 that rode through time carrying a message of peace to us in 2024. I wish you could have seen this heartfelt, time travelling love letter to what theatre artistry can do for us in our troubled times. You can find Randall Stuart’s SQUIRE here. It is perfect for theatre students, researchers, historians and lovers of the golden age of American regional theatre.
My daughter Sarah loves the color mustard. I love her. Here are some mustard colored houses in Ashland for her (and you) as we enter the mellowing of the year. She writes a wonderful and poetic substack that I also highly recommend. Here it is: am i too late?
I am wishing you joy, relief and a cool, crisp, joyous sense of purpose as we head into the beginning of the school year and yes, voting season. Visit Vote.org to sign up or check your registration.
Love, Molly
